About
The Battle of Britain in July-October 1940 was one of the defining moments of World War Two. It was a desperate aerial battle between the fighter pilots of the Royal Air Force (RAF) and the much larger German Air Force (Luftwaffe). Despite experiencing heavy losses, the RAF prevailed and saved Great Britain from the threat of invasion by Germany.
Among the more unusual memorials to this Battle are the large lace panels, intricately woven by a company in Nottingham, England to commemorate the story of the conflict.
To mark the 70th Anniversary of the Battle of Britain, the Air Force Museum of New Zealand will open its latest special exhibition, "Woven in War" on 30 July 2010. Visitors to this exhibition will have the opportunity to view one of the magnificent and rare commemorative lace panels from the Museum's own collection, while discovering the story of the Battle and the New Zealanders who took part in it.
