About
This is the sixth lecture in a series of six lectures presented by UC's Community Education.
Lecture Six: Elections: How To Choose.
Speakers include: Therese Arseneau (UC), Alan McRobie (former Waimakariri District Councillor).
This series provides an overview of why we have local democracy, and what the ongoing issues and tensions are in this tier of government - to generate some debate around this year’s elections.
Local Government is responsible for the economic development of our communities, for environmental health and safety and for local infrastructure. This means our local councils provide key services such as roads, public transport, water, sewerage, parks, sports centres, libraries, art galleries, civil defence – and much more. It also means they manage our resources and our wellbeing as a community. And yet voter turnout in local government elections is low (44% in 2007) compared to 76% voter turnout for general elections (in 2008). Why is this? What is it about local government that we don’t know or understand?
Door sales will be available however to guarantee a place, please phone Community Education on 03 364 2470 to enrol.
