About

Body Festival cancelled due to earthquake damage

The Body Festival board and director last night made the decision to cancel this year's Body Festival, which was to have opened on 24 September, due primarily to concerns over the safety of public and artists following the earthquake in Christchurch on Saturday.

The cancellation covers the entire workshop and performance programme. Body Festival staff, board and performers are now looking ahead to a bigger and better event in 2011.

The Body Festival presents two outstanding dance films.

Rhythm is it!

‘You can change your life in a dance class!’ Royston Maldoom

Berlin, January 2003. Amazing things are happening in the Arena down at Berlin’s industrial harbour. 250 Berlin children and teenagers of 25 different nationalities are dancing to Stravinsky’s Le Sacre du Printemps, choreographed by Royston Maldoom and accompanied by the Berliner Philharmoniker conducted by Sir Simon Rattle.

‘Rhythm is it!’ is an emotional journey into new, unforeseen worlds and to hidden facets of these young people’s personalities, a sensitive and moving testimony to the power of dance and the raw talent of young people.

Pina Bausch & Folkwang Meets Africa

Pina Bausch speaks about the beginnings of the Tanztheater and the inescapable path she felt she had to follow. She talks about rehearsals, her pieces, her co-productions with other cities and countries and being on tour.

Folkwang Meets Africa

At the beginning of 2006 Henrietta Horn, artistic director of Folkwang Dance Studios, joined forces with dancers from Cameroon to create a dance performance for the Yaoundé dance festival. This film documents this fascinating process of intercultural exchange.
