About

The Re-Draft writing competition, now in its 10th year, is one of New Zealand's top competitions for teenagers. It is the only one that allows you to write in any genre, on any subject, in whatever style you choose, and with no restrictions on length. The competition is free and you can submit up to three entries a year, showing your skill in more than one genre if you wish.

There are normally between 30 and 50 ‘winners’ each year, so the prize is not money but the satisfaction of winning a place in an attractive publication that showcases your work and puts your excellence on public record for all time.

This high-level competition is judged by two award-winning experts in the field, Tessa Duder of Auckland and James Norcliffe of Christchurch. The deadline for entries is 30 September.

At this year’s festival, the competition sponsors, the School for Young Writers, are offering Re-Draft Workshops. Our expert tutors will provide feedback on your writing and suggest ways to improve your chances of success. Come along with your stories, poems or whatever else you are working on – or come for some inspiration that will get you started on the path to success.

The workshops will take place at the Writers’ Block, Hagley Community College from 1-3pm on Saturday, 11 September.
