Beca Artist Series: Michael Houstoun
Saturday 01 Apr
Wolfgang Amadeus Mozart composed some of the most memorable music ever written. While not always understood by the audience of his day, who grappled to appreciate his radical ideas, his music is loved today for the immense joy and emotional depth it conveys.
Mozart elevated the concerto to a new level and his piano concertos were especially highly regarded for their sophistication and expressive qualities. Despite being composed only one year apart, the two concertos featured in this concert demonstrate deeply contrasting characters. K. 466 is stormy and tension-filled while K. 488 is cheerfully optimistic.
Michael Houstoun is one of New Zealand’s most highly regarded musicians. Born in Timaru, Houstoun achieved placings in three of the world’s most prestigious piano competitions – Van Cliburn, Leeds and Tchaikovsky. He performs with all of New Zealand’s leading musical ensembles as well as presenting regular solo recital tours and recording.
