Songkran Thai New Year Festival
Sunday 16 Apr
Songkran, the traditional Thai New Year, is celebrated nationwide in Thailand, usually in mid-April.
One part of the celebration is religious, marked by merit-making at local temples, ceremonial bathing of Buddha images as a symbol of homage, sprinkling parents' or elders' palms with a few drops of perfumed water as a demonstration of love and respect, and ceremonies to pay respects to members of families, and friends, who have passed away. Other parts of Songkran are fun-filled, with good-natured water throwing, cultural performances, music, dance, sports, and games.
Here in Christchurch, at Wat Buddha Samakhee, we will gather to observe the occasion on Sunday 16th April 2017 with MONSTER THAI FOOD FAIR, THAI CLASSICAL DANCING, LUCKY DIP, and MODERN DANCE (POT-LUCK DANCING PARTNERS).
The Songkran Festival Organising Committee cordially invites you, your family, and friends, to join with the local Thai community to celebrate Songkran, on Sunday 16th April, at Wat Buddha Samakhee (The Thai Buddhist Temple), 359 Marshlands Road.
